Glennon Doyle’s new feminist memoir Untamed is about letting go of our desire to please others so that we can truly and fully please ourselves as women. As a recovering good girl and someone who writes about this exact subject, I found her book to be powerful, inspirational, and deeply relatable. Glennon is a masterful storyteller and truth bomber. Here are my favorite “mic drops” from the book:

  1. Numbness keeps us from becoming.

  2. There is no glory except straight through your story.

  3. When a woman finally learns that pleasing the world is impossible, she becomes free to learn how to please herself.

  4. Perhaps imagination is not where we go to escape reality but where we go to remember it.

  5. Discontent is evidence that your imagination has not given up on you.

  6. The truest, most beautiful life never promises to be an easy one.

  7. The moral arc of our life bends toward meaning—especially if we bend it that way with all our damn might.

  8. May our dreams become our plans.

  9. Selfless women make for an efficient society but not a beautiful, true, or just one.

  10. It’s a lifelong battle for a woman to stay whole and free in a world hell-bent on caging her.

  11. The fact that the programmed poison of racism was pumped into us may not be our fault, but getting it out is sure as hell our responsibility.

  12. Heartbreak delivers your purpose. If you are brave enough to accept that delivery.

  13. Every time you pretend to be less than you are, you steal permission from other women to exist fully.

  14. I think we are only bitter about other people’s joy in direct proportion to our commitment to keep joy from ourselves.

  15. It is wild to let others be wild.

Highly, highly recommend.

My upcoming book, Break the Good Girl Myth, continues the conversation by giving women a map to recognize how the good girl archetype manifests inside of them, and what to do about it. You can pre-order it today (keep your receipt, as I have a fun bonus in store for you).
