Before Dusk

In the alter, before dusk,

I was digging a hole.

It was as though

The dirt was my heart

And my small hands

Were trying to get in

As when one searches

For treasure.

I eventually stopped

And placed my body in

The hole and let the dirt

Layer over me

To shield me from the sun.

I sunk down and cried

And by the time

The orange of dusk filled the desert

I was invisible, drinking in the water.
